Far Field

Far Field is co-created VR Dance experience in collaboration with Slowdanger performance company based in California. We collaborated with five dancers from this company to bring to life a world depicting their experiences through Covid19, embodiment in a digital space and embodiment and consent.

We began our process with motion capture data of each dancer completing a solo phrase, a pastoral phrase and a group phase. For our motion data captures, we used a kinect camera rig to collect series of 2D video which was then plugged into DeepMotion to extract motion data.  ︎︎︎

The initial motion capture data generated by DeepMotion was very broken, jittery and ungrounded to an axis.
I learned Adobe Motion Builder in order to fix this data by applying filters to the animation and manually manupulating the data to match the original videos.

VR Experience Showcased at The Kennedy Center
The layout of the experience is in the shape of a pentagon to provide solo rooms for each of the five dancers. Audience members are first introduced to the experience in the central room where they have the choice of five different tokens that they can place into the portal. This then transports them into the corresponding dancer’s room depending on which token was chosen. In each room you are able to watch the motion captured avatar dance, 2D media of the dancers, and a voiceover written and performed by the dancer about their journey with embodiment in digital spaces. Audience members could leave a room at anytime or were transported back to the center room once a dancer’s piece was completed.

                                              Day of Showcase
Audience members were seated and introduced to VR controlls and made to feel comfortable before                                                       starting.
