Nostalgia for a Future that Never Came is a fashion performance showcase that combines live performance and digital projections in order to transport our characters into a new(augmented) world. We wanted to explore what it means to exist in a “digital space” since the whole world existed online for a year and a half during covid. Our project will bring the audience into a fantasy, liminal space in which live actors portray different tarot cards. The use of projection mapping is to tie this integration of reality and cyberspace and the tarot card theme together.

This piece is designed to illuminate the complex relationship between society and technology, focusing on the expectations we hold for technological advancements—both realized and unrealized. Presented through the symbolic framework of a three-card tarot reading(a fortune telling tool) featuring The Star, the Three of Cups, and The Sun, each character dons a handcrafted garment that embodies the essence of its respective tarot card.

This project is very special to me as it was the first introduction to experience design I every explored. I was not trained at all in production management, projection design, or marketing when I took on this project so it was alot of trial and error that resulted in a lot of lessons. It was showcased in small town Nebraska, where most people had never heard of immersive installations or experience design. I experienced a lot of push back when trying to showcase Nostalgia because of this and I had a lot of people telling me that I wouldn’t be able to pull it off. I learned so much throughout this entire process and am very grateful for how it turned out and the journey of making it happen.
